World Dog Show 2008

On the first day we were up and on the way early to the show site to collect our correspondent passes for Champions Canine Newspaper and get ourselves oriented. We quickly bumped into two Canadians, Virginia Lyne and Phyllis Wolfish. The venue for the show was a massive complex with three large halls boasting over 25 rings in each, all running from 8am until late in the afternoon. The show itself was a very well run event with ample room for exhibitors and spectators and everything at your disposal. After judging of several breeds, we headed back into the city as Shih Tzu were being judged the next day and we would take advantage of the time to see Stockholm. We explored all around the waterfront area and had our first taste of Gamla Stan, the old city and the Palace and knew we would be back several times before our trip was over.

The next day we arrived at the show site for 8am as Shih Tzu judging would begin at 9am. A complete report of Shih Tzu judging can be found in link contained on each page.
After judging w e left the show exhausted after a long day and took the train back into Stockholm.

Saturday was a day for seeing other breeds of interest and running into fellow Canadians and people we knew. Will and Jamie Alexander were there along with Marc Joliat, Sandra Lex, Bob and Elaine Whitney, Dick and Nancy Lopsachuk, Bob and Margo Rowbotham, Sharon and Charlie Francis, Virginia Lyne, Phylis Wolfish, Shirley Limoges, Alan Ewles, Dwain McLean, Mary Robertson, Kim Groves, Christine & John Heartz, Eva Monsen and Lynda Berar….there was quite a turnout. We watched Marjorie Good with the Sealyham, Can Am Ch Efbe’s Hidalgo At Goodspice, who went on to win Best In Show. We had lunch with Bo Skanlin and his wife Anna from Sweden who Richard judged with in Australia last year. Overall we had a great day socializing and seeing some top dogs.
That evening we headed back into Gamla Stan and decided to once again sample a little of everything. We visited several pubs and bars, sampling many hors d’oeuvres and drinks along the way. We ended up at a lively dance club, Kolingen where we spent the remainder of the night dancing and enjoying the party of the Stockholm scene.

The final day was judging of Best in Show and we headed over to get our press seating and enjoy the festivities of the night. The ring presentation was wonderful with the Swedish breeds being showcased as well as many examples of the local culture. The remainder of the group judging, judging of obedience, Breeder Showcase, Junior Handler and Best Junior in Show awards were given out before the finale of Best in Show. We were delighted to see the Sealyham as it was Canadian bred and it was our obvious favorite. The tension in the building was palpable and the Swedish Kennel Club did and awesome job hosting the event and making it memorable. The noise was thundering as the Sealyham was chosen Best in Show and a flood of people entered the ring. We were lucky to be able to congratulate Marjorie personally and be part of such a momentous occasion. We celebrated the evening with fellow Canadians Shirley Limoges, Sandra Lex, Bob and Margo Rowbotham and Bob and Elaine Whitney at a local pub and then returned to our hotel. We had made plans to spend the day with Bruno, Rosa and friend Claudia from Italy.
